In the spring of 2001, I started to sketch out a number of t-shirt ideas. I got hooked up with a Japanese clothing company that was interested in taking some samples to their next trade show. The buyer really liked my designs, but was worried that I had no brand identity. “Corporate branding is really important these days,” I was told. At this point I had already designed a shirt that simply said “Corporate Logo” as a way of poking fun at the ubiquitous brand names in American fashion. The idea of branding my shirts really seemed to go against everything I wanted to do. I agonized over this for a week or so, until it hit me one day, “what if my corporate logo was Corporate Logo?” In 2002, I moved to a loft in South Williamsburg, and my new roommate Bret Birnbaum came in as a partner. We still run our operation out of this home office, and our shirts are printed locally.
Many of my early designs were statements against conformity, consumerism, and also the easy slogans found on most political t-shirts. We like to think of our messages as being more timeless than most popular shirts, and so stay away from specific political references. We want to get people thinking, but we also don’t want to tell people what to think.
As we’ve grown we try to find manufacturers and small business people who share our ethos, both on the supply and distribution sides. These days, most of our shirts are printed on American Apparel, a US based company that promotes fair wages and good working conditions. The challenge for us is to grow successful without becoming a faceless corporate logo.
